What We Learn When We Play In the Math Center

It is easy to get students involved with numbers, measuring, and problem-solving when the Math Center is equipped with a wide variety of concrete materials. This provides a solid foundation for exploring beginning math concepts, practicing new skills, and applying skills they have mastered. Child Development The Math Cen-ter offers many experiences to facilitate growth and enhance skills in all areas of development. Physical Skills: strengthen fine motor control, and refine eye-hand co-ordination. Social/Emotional Skills: develop self-control, promote perseverance and confidence, enhance cooperation through sharing materials and working together to solve a problem. Language Skills: introduce the language of mathematics and enhance the ability to ask questions and explain solutions. Intellectual Skills: introduce and refine sorting, matching, classifying, sequencing, patterning, one-to-one correspondence, rote counting, number combinations, problem solving.

NAEYC— Teachers Standard 6

This is the sixth in a series of articles on NAEYC to better help parents understand what our accreditation means to our
program and to your child’s experience in our Center. Standard 6 is the Teachers standard and employs and supports a
teaching staff that has the educational qualifications, knowledge, and professional commitment necessary to promote
children’s learning and development and to support families’ diverse needs and interests.
6.A.05 All teachers (see Definitions of Teaching Staff) have a minimum of an associate’s degree or equivalent. At least
75% of teachers have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree or equivalent in early childhood education, child development,
elementary education, or early childhood special education that encompasses child development and learning of
children birth through kindergarten; family and community relationships; observing, documenting, and assessing
young children; teaching and learning; and professional practices and development.
Evidence:
Ct Charts A Course Registry – Renewal Staff Report
(The Connecticut Charts A Course Registry is a computer program where all early childhood teachers in the state of CT send
their college transcripts and First Aid and CPR Training Certificates as evidence they have the education needed to teach. The
Registry then allows each Center to print their own report. Ours says the Director meets the standards, 100% of the teachers
meet the standard and 50% of our Assistant teachers meet the standard.

Sunscreen

It’s that time of year again! Sun, Sand and fun! If you would like us to apply sunscreen on your child in the
afternoons (we ask that you apply in the AM) please send in a bottle of sunscreen , 30 SPF or higher, labeled
with your child’s name. Please do not send in the aerosol sunscreen as it uses a flammable propellant or the stick
(roll on) sunscreen because it takes way too long to apply. Thank you!

Preschool Waterplay

The Preschool class is planning to start water play on the week of June 13th. They will do water play every
Tuesday and Thursday (weather permitting) throughout the summer. Please make sure your child has a swim
suit, towel and water shoes.
